BAWSI Newsletter—January 22, 2010

Happy 2010 to everyone in BAWSI-land!
Hope and optimism rules as we begin a new year creating paths for women athletes to bring health and hope to girls, their moms and children with disabilities. If you'd like to volunteer alongside the athletes in any of the great BAWSI programs, go to http://www.bawsi.org/getinv/getinv_volunteer.html and sign-up today. BAWSI will be on elementary school playgrounds every day of the week beginning March and going through the end of the school year.

BAWSI Girls going to Stanford Women's Basketball

On Saturday, January 30, 150 BAWSI Girls from three Peninsula elementary schools will be VIP guests as Stanford women's basketball takes on the University of Arizona at 2pm. The Stanford lacrosse and field hockey athletes will join the girls in the stands as mentors for the afternoon. If you're in the Bay Area and want to see some great women's basketball, join the BAWSI Girls as they get their first-ever look at collegiate women's basketball.

Cal Women's Basketball hosts College Day
While the BAWSI Girls are at Stanford, Cal women's basketball will host "College Day" as they take on Arizona State at 2:30pm on Saturday, January 30. Pre-game activities start 90 minutes prior to tipoff. Enjoy face painting, poster making, inflatable bounce house, pop-a-shot, appearances by the Cal Band, Dance Team and Oski, plus giveaways, contests and much more. Stay after the game for an autograph session with the team on the court. It's free admission for all youth and chaperones, but you must register online.

Save the Date for BAWSI Dads and Daughters at SCU on February 27
Join former San Francisco 49er Brent Jones for a pre-game event at the Santa Clara women's basketball game on Saturday, February 27 at 1pm followed by the final home game of the season featuring SCU v. University of Portland at 2pm. Details to come your way soon via e-news and BAWSI's Facebook page.

A Golden Opportunity for BAWSI at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Golf Tournament
The AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am golf tournament will be played the second week of February. The top male golf professionals in the world will be paired with celebrities from the movies, television, music and sports. Brandi Chastain, US Olympic and World Cup champion and BAWSI's co-founder, will be one of only two women playing in the tournament. BAWSI will be one of 89 charities who will benefit from the Birdies for Charity fundraising campaign. The top four charities who have raised the most money by January 29 will be given a booth at the grand entrance of the tournament during one of the first two days of play. Literally thousands of fans walk through the grand entrance so this honor would allow BAWSI's work to become visible in a massive way. Paired with Brandi's presence in the tournament and the media generated through her, a booth at the grand entrance could open up possibilities for BAWSI far beyond what we could dream. Help us make this dream a reality by making a donation or a pledge today. Just click https://birdies.attpbgolf.com/charities/bawsi where a gift of any size can make a big difference in BAWSI's ability to put more women athletes as role models of health and hope into the lives of young girls, their moms, and children with disabilities. Every gift will be matched by an additional 10% by the Monterey Peninsula Foundation.
