Gov. Schwarzenegger honors BAWSI for fitness work with girls
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Sept. 25, 2006) - BAWSI has been awarded a silver medal by the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports for its efforts to build self-esteem and reduce obesity among girls.
BAWSI was recognized for "positively impacting the physical activity, fitness and well-being of California's children and youth."
Beginning with a pilot program in 2005 serving one San Jose school, BAWSI's Girls Fitness Teams have expanded to nearly 600 girls at nine elementary schools in San Jose and Santa Clara. Coached and mentored by women athletes from South Bay universities, the younger girls participate in fitness programs, learn to adopt healthy lifestyles and attend women's sports events.
BAWSI is a non-profit organization that enlists the talent and experience of Bay Area women athletes in improving the lives of children and women.
