BAWSI commended by SJ City Council for promoting fit lifestyles among girls
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Oct. 25, 2005) - The Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative
(BAWSI) was honored by San Jose City Council today for its work promoting
healthier lifestyles for girls in the community.
The commendation cites BAWSI's implementation of the Women's Sports
Foundation national GoGirlGo! program using women athlete-mentors from
local college athletic programs to teach the value of exercise and healthy
lifestyles among girls at four local schools: Independence and Overfelt High
Schools and Pomeroy and San Antonio Elementary Schools.
"I am very happy to support programs that champion women's health and their
inclusion in sports," sponsoring Councilmember Ken Yeager said. "It is so
important for young people to adopt a healthy lifestyle at a young age, and the
Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative is helping young women do just that."
"In their first year BAWSI has already made a significant contribution to the
community, recruiting 170 young athletes and volunteer coaches to participate in
the GoGirlGo! program culminating at the Metro Silicon Valley Marathon."
Before the 1:30 p.m. City Council meeting, Yeager presented a $5,000 check to
BAWSI to be used for entry fees for the GoGirlGo! participants, parents and
coaches who will walk in the 5K portion of the marathon.
Less than a year old, BAWSI is a non-profit organization that enlists the talent
and experience of Bay Area women athletes in improving the lives of children
and women. Visit our website at www.bawsi.org.
