BAWSI Expands Programs for 2010/2011 Season
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Aug 31, 2010) - The 2010/2011 season is here! The Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative (BAWSI) is excited about expanding our BAWSI Girls, Salud Por Vida, and BAWSI Rollers programs. We have expanded from 14 schools in the 2009/2010 season to 18 schools for the 2010/2011 season starting this fall, which is the largest number of schools in our five-year history.

BAWSI Girls, our after school health and fitness program for girls in elementary school grades second through fifth, will be adding two South Bay elementary schools, Scott Lane Elementary and Thomas P. Ryan Elementary, to our list of schools starting this fall. The most significant expansion is happening in the Peninsula this season. We have increased our BAWSI Girls presence from three schools last season to five schools this season. Last year BAWSI Girls was at Taft Elementary, Selby Lane Elementary, and Edith Landels Elementary. In addition to the three schools we were at last season, we are returning to Mariano Castro Elementary and adding Garfield Elementary this season.

Salud Por Vida, our health and fitness programs for the mothers of BAWSI Girls and other community members, has doubled their Peninsula presence from one school to two schools. Last season, Salud Por Vida's only Peninsula school was Edith Landels Elementary. This season, Salud Por Vida will be working out at Mariano Castro Elementary as well.

BAWSI Rollers is also taking off! Program Director Sharon Kelleher has been working hard at adding new schools to the program. This October, there will be a pilot (four week) session at a new school, Montague Elementary, in Santa Clara. In addition, BAWSI Rollers is excited to once again return to Taylor, Blackford, and Majestic Way elementary schools.
