Kids in wheelchairs can be fit. Kids in wheelchairs can even aspire to athletic fun and success.
BAWSI Rollers is a sports program for third through eighth graders with physical disabilities. Similar in format to BAWSI Girls, it includes wheelchair basketball, rugby, soccer, football, volleyball, hockey, softball, bowling and other sports and games that develop hand-eye coordination, strength and confidence.
Like all BAWSI programs, BAWSI Rollers utilizes athletes that participants can identify with and learn from. World-class disabled athletes including those who have competed in the Paralympic Games serve as coaches, share stories and motivate BAWSI Rollers.
Why BAWSI Rollers?
Because kids don't need legs to be fit, nor does being in a wheelchair change the lifestyle and mental strength that kids need to be healthy and successful.
What do BAWSI Rollers do?
BAWSI Rollers sessions include four stations with different themes: life lessons, goal setting, teamwork and healthy competition. At the life lessons station, coaches and participants discuss a different word every week, such as respect, responsibility, leadership, and teamwork. The coaches have an opportunity to share valuable lessons they have learned through playing sports and other life experiences. BAWSI Rollers also practice goal setting, teamwork and healthy competition each week so that they develop both physical and mental skills.
